Blogging the Future – The Use of Online Media in the Next Generation of Scientists

Sunday, January 17 – 11:30am – 12:35pm

D. Blogging the Future – The Use of Online Media in the Next Generation of Scientists – Stacy Baker

Description: Ms. Baker has changed schools (moved from Maryland to Staten Island) and the use of the Web in teaching is now an even greater part of her teaching job. She is going to come again with a new set of high school students to discuss how they use the web in the classroom. See her site and her school’s site

Discuss:

My students will each be presenting a short topic that touches on how they use web applications to learn about science. The audience will be asked throughout the presentation to participate and add to our overall understanding of how to use the internet (online games, applications, blogs, etc.) to inspire the next generation of scientists.

For example, one student will be presenting a short video game he created that he’s using to collect data for a research project he is working on. He would like members of the audience to play the game and then discuss it and how similar games can be used to educate students. If you are a computer game programmer or just someone who is familiar with the use of games in education we’d love for you to add your expertise to this discussion.

Other topics will include social networking, iPhone apps, and blogs.
